Home Away From Home
Part 2
Hailing from Malaysia's Borneo Island, photographer Bryan Tang has spent over a decade in Melbourne since his high school years, and later making homes in London, Berlin, and Tokyo. Through his extensive experiences living abroad, he came to realize that "home" is not merely a physical location, but rather encompasses the relationships and community one builds there.
The friends he encountered in Tokyo shared a similar circumstance, which inspired him to start his project, "From Home."
Despite being away from their homeland, the space they have built in their new environments and the bonds they have formed with partners and friends have become a new sense of home for them.
Through his photographs, Bryan communicates this concept of home, capturing the essence of the connections and spaces that define it.
マレーシア・ボルネオ島出身のフォトグラファー、ブライアン・タンは高校生の時からメルボルンに10年以上、そしてロンドン、ベルリン、東京と海外生活を重ねてきた。異国での生活を長く経験した彼が気づいたのは、"家（ホーム）"とは、単に場所ではなく、そこで築いた人間関係やコミュニティの中にある、ということだった。
彼が日本で出会った大切な友人も似た環境に身を置いていて、それが彼のパーソナルプロジェクト"From Home"を始めるきっかけになった。故郷から離れた身でありながら、新たな環境で築いた自分のスペースや友人との絆が、彼らにとって新たな家であることを、写真を通じて伝えている。

What is it like to be away 'from home' for you? It may sound a little bit childish, but to be honest I still don't feel I'm away "From Home".
What do you miss most about your hometown? The view of the apartment complex. I used to love playing tag with my friends and running up the stairs.
What do you like about your current home? Size and shape. I also like it when my current home reminds me of an old child's room.
あなたにとって”ホーム”から離れるということは？ 少し子供っぽく聞こえるかもしれないけど、いまだに「故郷を離れている」という実感はない。
地元の何が恋しいですか？ 団地の景色。友達と鬼ごっこをしたり、階段を駆け上がったりするのが好きだった。
いまの家の好きなところは？ 広さと形。また、昔の子供部屋を思い出させてくれること。

What do you love about your current home? Waking up to the sun in the morning, and tea time alone with your mother at 2pm when the warm sunshine enters the living room through the big window. Where my room is surrounded by things I love. Baking in the big kitchen.
いまの家の好きなところは？ 朝の太陽の光で目が覚めて、14時に暖かい太陽の光が大きな窓からリビングに入りお母さんと2人きりで過ごすティータイム。自分の部屋が好きで囲まれているところ！大きなキッチンでベーキングすること！

What is it like to be home away “From Home”? I moved to Tokyo right after graduating from high school, but it is a completely different life and environment, so it is both lonely and fun. Every time I go back home, it feels like a continuation of what it was like before I moved to Tokyo. I am happy to see my family and friends, the scenery, and the taste of the restaurants in the same way.
Sometimes I wonder how many more times I will be able to meet my loved ones in my hometown, and I sometimes think a little negatively, but I have chosen this place for what I want to do, so I have to enjoy it and keep improving so I won't regret it.
What do you miss the most about your hometown? All of it.
What do you love about your current home? I love the sunshine and the beautiful light in the morning and the evening. I also like the white-based rooms with curtains dividing the beds. I like light blue interiors. If I want to put something on the wall, I make it myself. I'm not good at organising things when I have a lot of things, so I try to have as little as possible. I like to retreat into this simple space, relax and watch movies and comedy, and take my time to eat and make accessories.
地元を離れるのはどんな感じですか？ 高校を卒業してすぐ上京したのですが、全然違う生活、環境なので、寂しさとおもしろさどちらもあります。帰省する度に、上京前の続きのような感覚になり、家族、友達、景色、ご飯屋さんの味、変わらずフィットするあの感じが幸せです。
地元の大切な人とあと何回会えるのかななど少しネガティブなこと考えてしまうこともありますが、自分のやりたいことのために自分で選んでいるのでその分後悔のないように楽しみつつ、向上心を持ち続けないとなと思います。
地元の何が恋しいですか？ 全部。
いまの家の好きなところは？ 日当たりが良く、朝も夕方もキレイな光が入るところがとても好きです。白ベースのお部屋でカーテンでベットが仕切りになっているのもお気に入りです。インテリアで集めるものはいつも直感で水色に惹かれてしまいがちです。壁に何か貼りたくなったら自分で作ったりもします。
物を多く持つと整理が苦手なため、できるだけ少なくしてます。このシンプルな空間に引きこもって、のんびり自分の趣味、音楽映画お笑いを鑑賞したり、ゆっくりご飯やアクセサリーを作る時間が好きです。

What do you miss the most about their hometown? Breakfast, especially merienda
What do you love about your home now? Open and bright! comfortable kitchen to bake and cook.

What is it like to be home away “From Home”? An evolution of melancholy, excitement, contentment, and then all over again.
What do you miss the most about their hometown? My childhood innocence, and grandma’s dumplings.
What do you love about your current home? A place to slow down and rest, a chance to settle and furnish my own space, and not have to think about breaking the 25kg luggage limit!
地元を離れるのはどんな感じですか？ 憂鬱、高揚、満足、そしてまたその繰り返し。
地元の何が恋しいですか？ 子供時代の無邪気さと、おばあちゃんの餃子。
いまの家の好きなところは？ ゆっくり落ち着ける、自分のスペースがあること。25kgの荷物制限について考えなくていいこと。
