Taipei and Tokyo Unveiled
Surprisingly, we don't have official diplomatic relations. It has been more than 50 years since the termination of diplomatic ties and Japan and Taiwan have continued active exchanges at the personal level and have established friendly relations. Taiwanese most favorite foreign country is Japan, and the Japanese always go traveling to Taiwan. It's rare to see this strong relationship.
A Taiwan-born photographer, Valerie Yuwen Hsieh, explores young people's minds in Tokyo and Taipei.

Can you describe what is Taipei?
Strong publication culture/local galleries and nice beaches are available within a one and half hour's drive. My favourite part is NT$180(=¥800) Hot Pot.
Can you describe what is Tokyo?
Well, I was only there for 0.39% of my life. If I could dare to describe it, I think that would be familiarity. When you take pictures and sit down to optimize saturation on your photo, you almost don’t need to because the city scheme is already so vibrant.
Which country do you want to visit this summer?
I’d love to visit Bulgaria one day. Many great films were shot there and I wanted to do one of those location-hunting trips based off of screens. But if it’s within Taiwan, the Sun-Moon Lake where the song originated from by Teresa Teng or orchid island would be lovely for summer days.

台北はどんなところですか？
出版文化やギャラリーが充実していて、車で1時間半も走れば素敵なビーチもあります私のお気に入りは180元(=800円)の火鍋屋さんです。
東京はどんなところでしょう？
人生の0.39%しかいなかったですけども、あえて表現するならば、それは「親しみ」だと思います。街が鮮やかで生き生きしていると思います。
この夏、行ってみたい国はどこですか？
いつかブルガリアに行ってみたいです。多くの名作が撮影された場所なので、映画を題材にしたロケ地探しの旅がしたいです。でも、台湾なら、テレサ・テンの曲の原点である日月潭や蘭島などは、夏の日差しに映える素敵な場所だと思います。

Can you describe Tokyo?
It is a fascinating city. Tokyo is one of the most populated cities in the world, and I feel that it is a place with a lot of individuality.
Have you been to Taipei?
Never but I imagine that Taipei is as unique as Tokyo!
What music would you like to play at dinner with friends?
I want to listen to Euro rock

あなたにとって東京とは？
魅力的な街です。人の数だけ個性があり、その中でも東京という場所は人口が圧倒的に多く、個性に富んだ場所だなと身に染みて感じています。
台北に行ったことある？
訪れたことはまだありません。台湾の首都ということもあり東京と同様にの個性に富んでいると想像しているのですが、同じアジア人でも文化・宗教が異なる為、日本とはまた違ったどんな個性があるのかという期待があります。
友達とのディナーでかけたい音楽は？

What is Taipei to you?
Taipei is the city where I spent my university life. As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei is a little slower paced than Tokyo, and people often ride around the city on motorbikes, taking in the breeze. There is delicious and cheap food, and greenery everywhere you go.
What kind of city is Tokyo?
Tokyo is my second home. Like my hometown Taipei in Taiwan, it's where my loved ones are, and it's a big, friendly, exciting city.
What have you started doing recently?
I'm trying to learn Hangul. I also started Pilates.

あなたにとって台北とは？
大学時代を過ごしました。台湾の首都である台北は、東京のテンポより少し遅めで、人々はよくバイクで風を浴びながら街を走り回って遊んでいます。どこ行っても美味しくて安く食べれるグルメあるし、どこ行っても緑がいっぱいです。
東京ってどういう街？
私の第二の家です。故郷の台湾・台北もそうですけど、私を育った、私の愛する人たちが居る場所であり、親しくて人をワクワクさせる大都会です。
最近始めたことは？
ハングルを勉強しようと思っています。ピラティスも始めてみました。

What is Tokyo like for you?
Next year will be 20 years since I moved to Tokyo, so I've been living in Tokyo longer than in my hometown. I like Tokyo for all the good and bad things.
If I hadn't moved to Tokyo, I wouldn't have been able to meet the people and experience the things I did, so at first I felt lonely and crushed, but now I have good memories of that.
It's a place where you can make everything happen depending on yourself. I want to keep staying here.
Can you tell us about your experience in Taipei?
I spent three years traveling between Taipei and Japan for my modeling jobs. I traveled to Taipei for the first time with a friend and happened to meet a designer who approached me and I joined an agency and got a job in no time.
There are countless unforgettable memories and encounters in Taipei. I still keep in touch with my agency in Taipei and I want to visit Taipei again and see everyone.

東京はあなたにとって？
人が集中している場所だから孤独を沢山感じる街だと思うけど自分次第で全て叶えていける場所だと思う。上京して来年で20年になるから地元より東京の方が長くなるけど良い事も悪い事も含めて私は東京が好き。
もし上京してなかったら出会えなかった人達や出来なかった経験があるから最初は孤独で押し潰されそうでどうしようも無かったけど今となってそれも良い思い出。これからも私は東京に居たい。
台北にどんな思い入れがある？
モデルの仕事で3年間を台北と日本を行き来していた。友人と旅行で初めて台北に行ってたまたま出会ったデザイナーから声を掛けてられてあっという間に事務所も仕事も決まってその日から本当に沢山の仕事をして沢山友達が出来た。
忘れられない位大切な思い出や出会いが台北には数え切れない程ある。今も変わらず台北のagencyとは連絡を取り合っていてまた台北に遊びに行って皆に会いたい。
